SUMMARY:Quarantine Nudes by Kevin Berlin
DESCRIPTION:“Quarantine Nudes” by Kevin Berlin is a solo show of the artist’s work. \n“Quarantine Nudes” revisits the classical nude with spontaneity and directness\, following the Renaissance tradition of drawing from life as the basis for expression and the development of ideas. Created shortly after the end of quarantine in Italy in 2020\, “Quarantine Nudes” explores themes such as vulnerability\, desire\, and hidden thoughts portrayed in a palette of primarily black and white with touches of vibrant color. \nExhibition dates: November 28\, 2022 – February 13\, 2023 \n \n \n“45 Years of Nudes” is Berlin’s second solo show at the WEAM.  \n“45 Years of Nudes” explores Berlin’s lifetime interest in the human form as a basis for inspiration. The installation features a 45-year timeline of painting\, sculpture\, and performance art. As a unique retrospective exhibition\, it invites the viewer to take a closer look at the creative process and development of the nude over time. \nExhibition dates: February 14\, 2023 – May 29\, 2023

SUMMARY:The Eroticism of Things
DESCRIPTION:A pocket watch with a secret rear chamber\, a wooden dough scraper\, a shiny leather boot\, a fresh bread roll – even before Freud\, people were attributing erotic qualities to things. \n“The Eroticism of Things: Collections on the History of Sexuality” traces the material and immaterial production of eroticism. Shape and color\, purpose and use\, implicit allusions\, and explicit renderings all make things the stuff of erotic fantasies while also making them eloquent documents for a cultural history of sexuality. \nUsing examples culled from the collections of sexologists Magnus Hirschfeld and Alfred Kinsey\, as well as from Naomi Wilzig’s art collection\, the exhibition sheds light on differing natures of and intents in collecting\, classifying\, presenting\, and interpreting erotic things. The show asks what distinguishes eroticism\, sexuality\, and pornography from each other\, how erotic objects reinforce or question gender relations\, and how the everyday use of things can even turn killers of love into agents of love. \nThe exhibition shows all kinds of different erotic relationships people can enter into with things and treats the eroticization of things as a cultural practice that can play out either implicitly or explicitly\, in the imagination or in deed\, alone or between two or more people. Certain objects can kindle desire and lust\, provoke erotic fantasies\, and become tools of pleasure\, as an installation by the artist Marc Martin also shows. This is a joint exhibition by the Research Center for the Cultural History of Sexuality at Humboldt University\, Berlin and the Museum der Dinge (Museum of Things). Produced in collaboration with WEAM and the Kinsey Institute \nExhibition dates: December 03\, 2019 – March 30\, 2020 \n Buy Ticket

SUMMARY:Protected Beauty
DESCRIPTION:“Protected Beauty” examines masculine beauty through the lens of artists represented in the Kinsey Institute’s art collection. Many of the works in this exhibition came to the Kinsey Institute at a time when there were little to no other repositories that would accept artwork that presented the male nude outside of socially accepted contexts. \nNaomi Wilzig established her Miami Museum with a similar intention. She explained that she wanted to evoke the sensual experience of the pleasure and pain of love and also wanted to send a message of tolerance that acknowledges the community and diversity of mankind. The traveling exhibition “Protected Beauty” is a logical collaboration between two American institutions that focus on fostering an understanding of human sexuality. The result is breathtaking\, beautiful\, and full of social and political relevance. The exhibition includes works by Robert Mapplethorpe\, George Platt Lynes\, Wilhelm von Gloeden\, Mike Miksche\, Paul Cadmus\, Pavel Tchelitchew\, Andrey Avinoff\, and Marcel Vertes. \nExhibition dates: November 28\, 2016 – March 01\, 2017 \n Buy Ticket

SUMMARY:Paul Kagan
DESCRIPTION:In a sweeping review of the world of the ’60s when all eyes were fixated on San Francisco’s Haight-Ashbury counter-culture that gave birth to “flower children\,” psychedelic drugs\, and music that spoke to the heart of the civil rights movement\, “A Gada Da Vida” (“In the Garden of Eden”)\, a major body of work by celebrated photographer Paul Kagan\, will be seen for the first time in South Florida. Chicago-born Kagan had\, at the age of 10\, already distinguished himself as a photographer in a career that was to take serious shape in the late ’50s when his family moved to Los Angeles. While still in high school\, he led the Woolworth picket lines. By the time he entered Berkeley in 1960\, Kagan was listed by the House Un-American Activities Committees as one of the country’s most dangerous radicals traveling to Europe and Morocco\, taking photos along the way. He returned to San Francisco to open “Electric Tibet\,” the first head shop on Telegraph Avenue\, which was frequently published in “The Oracle\,” the hippie era’s famed newspaper. Universally remembered are the photos of a child sharing a saddle with a mounted policeman in Golden Gate Park and another\, “Yum Yam\,” of a couple having sex in the lotus position with an overlay of psychedelic images and colors. Many of his unpublished works\, including erotic phonographs\, photos of the Monterey Pop Festival\, the Human Be-In of 1967\, and the People’s Park protests of 1969\, will be on view at WEAM. \nExhibition dates: September 18\, 2014 – November 30\, 2014 \nBuy Ticket

SUMMARY:Justice Howard
DESCRIPTION:That Alice from Wonderland is one little strumpet. And we’re not the first to say so. In fact\, there’s a long list of literary\, cinematic\, and artistic voices out there that can give you a bunch of sexual interpretations of what falling down a rabbit hole really means. And the latest\, from famed photographer Justice Howard\, is about the best way we can think of to wrestle away those Monday blues. \nThe World Erotic Museum on South Beach will host a month-long exhibit by Howard entitled “Alice in Thunderland.” It will feature many of the photo subjects that have brought Howard to international acclaim\, emphasizing vixens. Think back on your formative years\, on the starlets that your parents always tried to keep you from watching (and doing other things\, too)\, and chances are at least some of them will show up at the exhibit\, at least in the photos. Mamie Van Doren\, Sybil Danning of The Howling II\, Amazon Women on the Moon\, and punk rock’s Exene Cervenka are just some of the ladies on display. But\, lest you think this is exploitation in the name of art\, know that Howard’s work comes from her mantra – women empowerment. Sure\, she focuses on Playboy Playmates and Penthouse Pets\, but it’s done with an awareness that turns the tables on the objectifying lens. \nExhibition dates: May 2\, 2011 – May 30\, 2011 \n Buy Ticket

SUMMARY:Rembrandt: Erotic Secrets
DESCRIPTION:Long dismissed as dirty little secrets\, Rembrandt’s erotic etchings have been known to collectors for centuries but rarely seen by the public. In 2001\, the British Museum exhibited several of the prints. Now\, the World Erotic Art Museum in Miami Beach is showing the entire collection together- 20 etchings- for the first time. \nRembrandt depicts sexual encounters in a suggestive but unambiguous way in works like “The Ledikant” (1646)\, which portrays a couple making love. \nBy today’s standards\, the etchings — inspired by the Bible\, Greek mythology\, and everyday life — seem tame. But in Rembrandt’s time\, they were scandalous and closely guarded by those who owned them. By featuring work by a renowned artist like Rembrandt (1609-69)\, the museum’s owner\, Naomi Wilzig\, said she hoped to “elevate our position within the artistic community” and prove that “erotic doesn’t mean pornographic.” \nExhibition dates: November 29\, 2011 – March 31\, 2012 \n Buy Ticket
