SUMMARY:Mariette Pathy Allen: Breaking Boundaries
DESCRIPTION:Exhibition: Mariette Pathy Allen: Breaking BoundariesCurated by: Jesse Egner and Orestes Gonzalez\, organized by Rebecca Fasman (Kinsey Institute\, Indiana University\, Bloomington)Location: WEAM\, 1205 Washington Avenue\, Miami\, FL Dates: December 2\, 2024 – September 2025 \nWe are proud to present an extraordinary retrospective of the groundbreaking work of photographer Mariette Pathy Allen\, whose ongoing practice over the last five decades has captured the love\, beauty\, intimacy\, joy\, and heartache of transgender and gender-expansive communities across the globe. This exhibition offers a powerful look into the evolution of attitudes toward transgender\, non-binary\, gender-fluid\, and gender non-conforming individuals\, seen through the lens of an artist who has dedicated her career to the humane and dignified portrayal of these communities. \nMariette Pathy Allen’s photographic journey with gender diversity began in 1978\, with images of this often underrepresented community defying the sensationalism often seen in media coverage at the time. Her intimate portraits of individuals\, couples\, and families depicted as relatable people helped reshape the then common perceptions of gender-variant individuals as freaks or deviants. Allen’s disarming modus operandi throughout her career has been to extend invitations to countless individuals to be themselves in front of her camera. In her photographs\, Allen and her subjects bear witness to the profound truths of gender-nonconformity; truths she beheld since the first time she took a photograph of a transgender person in 1978 and felt she was “not looking at a man or a woman\, but the essence of a human being.” \nAllen’s first book\, Transformations: Crossdressers and Those Who Love Them (1989)\, was a groundbreaking exploration and recognition of this widely overlooked and misunderstood community depicting them as partners\, lovers\, parents\, families\, and friends. Allen’s 2003 book\, The Gender Frontier\, illustrates and reflects upon a changing political climate through photographs and text covering political activism\, queer youth\, and a range of transgender people in the United States. Since then\, Allen has turned her lens to other parts of the world to photograph gender-expansive communities internationally\, leading to her books TransCuba and Transcendents: Spirit Mediums in Burma and Thailand. Published in 2014\, TransCuba documents the transgender community of Cuba during a time of increased visibility and acceptance. Transcendents\, published three years later in 2017\, provides a glimpse into the gender variant world of spirit mediums in Burma and Thailand. Allen has also been continuing her work in the United States with an ongoing series titled Gender Expanded\, offering representations and celebrations of transgender identities\, experiences\, and relationships. \nThis comprehensive exhibition traces the progression of Allen’s career\, spanning five decades of work in support of transgender visibility and dignity. Her photographs continue to serve as both artistic treasures and historical documents of a community that has been continuously marginalized\, yet thrives with strength and perseverance—especially during our current political climate that is once again changing\, in ways that attempt to diminish the validity of transgender individuals and threaten their safety. \nThis exhibition travels to WEAM in Miami\, a museum well-known and beloved for their beautiful and provocative exhibitions. Both Kinsey and WEAM are thrilled to be able to present these timely and impactful works at a time when the rights of LGBTQIA+ people are under attack. \n Buy Ticket

SUMMARY:Forbidden Fruit: The Art of Cuban Sexuality
DESCRIPTION:Exhibition: Forbidden Fruit: The Art of Cuban Sexuality\nCurated by: Antonio Permuy\, joined by assistant curator Karina Sirven\nLocation: WEAM\, 1205 Washington Avenue\, Miami\, FL\nDates: December 2\, 2024 – July 2025 \nWEAM is proud to present the museum’s first-ever exhibition of Cuban art\, a notable and historic exhibition\, as it is the largest known exhibition dedicated to Cuban erotic art ever held\, on-or-off the island. It spans more than 50 artists and over 100 works across painting\, drawing\, sculpture\, and photography from the last 90 years. The featured works span from the legendary Cuban “Vanguardia” (Vanguard) generation\, who are credited with creating modern Cuban art\, up to contemporary artists\, to bridge as well as contrast contemporary works with the works of previous decades\, stretching back to the early 1930s. Forbidden Fruit is noted for its ambitious scale and taboo-breaking\, genre-bending approach to curation. The fullest range of sexuality is showcased\, from the subtle\, lyrical\, abstract\, and symbolic to the palpable and explicit. Sexuality is explored through various themes\, including spirituality\, mythology\, and nature\, to the surprisingly dark landscapes of the psychological. \nForbidden Fruit is the last exhibition to feature the active involvement of two pioneering longtime leaders of the Miami art community\, Baruj Salinas and Margarita Cano\, who both passed away in 2024. Additionally\, the exhibition features works by established and emerging Cuban artists of the 20th and 21st centuries based in Greater Miami\, Tampa Bay\, New York\, Boston\, Chicago\, Europe\, and on the island\, capturing the growth\, evolution\, and synthesis of Cuban art with American art\, African art\, European art\, and Asian art. Even with this astonishing breadth\, curator Antonio Permuy explains\, “The exhibition does not attempt to aim for completeness within the vastness of Cuban art\, but rather prioritizes impact through unique selection of works and exhibiting arrangements.” Many of the works by the more well-known artists were purposefully curated to show rarely-seen aspects of these familiar artists\, therefore contributing to the public and historical depth of their legacies and respective bodies of work. \nNotable featured artists include vintage works by renowned pioneering “Vangaurdia” (Vanguard) artist Carlos Enriquez\, Amelia Pelaez\, the only woman who was part of the same pioneering “Vangaurdia” (Vanguard) movement\, as well as established figures such as Víctor Manuel\, Wifredo Lam\, Mario Carreño\, and René Portocarrero. \nGet tickets here! \nFeatured Artists: \nAGalban\,\nAdriano Nicot\,\nAgustín Cárdenas\,\nAgustín Fernández\,\nAldo Menéndez\,\nAlfredo Martínez\,\nAmelia Peláez\,\nÁngel Acosta León\,\nArcadio Cancio\,\nBaruj Salinas\,\nCarlos Enrique Alvarez\,\nCarlos Enríquez\,\nCarlos Navarro\,\nDiana Applekvist\,\nDionisio Perkins\,\nEnrique Riverón\,\nEsteban Alvarez Buylla\,\nFrank Garcia\,\nGabriel Sorzano\,\nGina Salvatore\,\nHector Molné\,\nHortensia Gronlier\,\nIsidro Llano\,\nIvonne Ferrer\,\nJesse Ríos\,\nJorge Dans\,\nJosignacio\,\nJosé Mijares\,\nJuan González\,\nJuan Navarrete\,\nLourdes Gómez Franca\,\nLuis Martinez Pedro\,\nLuis Marín\,\nManolo Rodríguez\,\nManuel Mendive\,\nMargarita Cano\,\nMariano Rodriguez\,\nMario Carreño\,\nMario Torroella\,\nMarlene Marrero & Peter Schildbach\,\nMia Permuy\,\nMiguel Fleitas Sr.\,\nMiguel A. SUMMARY:Everything All At Once by Bettina Rheims
DESCRIPTION:Bettina Rheims\, born in France in 1952\, is a contemporary fine art and commercial photographer known for her portrayals of the nude body and her exploration and transformation of ideas about femininity\, the male gaze\, sexuality\, and power in her work. \nThe twelve images in Bettina Rheims: Everything All At Once come from the Modern Lovers and Espionnes series created by Rheims between 1989 and 1991. Shot in London and Paris at the height of the AIDS crisis\, these photographs were her first large-scale explorations of gender identity. The androgyny of her subjects resists and subverts the rigid gender stereotypes prevalent in society\, forcing us to focus on the physical and human details of each person in front of us as they have chosen to embody themselves. \nThis exhibition travels to the World Erotic Art Museum (WEAM) in Miami Beach\, a museum well-known and beloved for its beautiful and provocative exhibitions. This will be the first time these works will be shown in Miami\, and both Kinsey and WEAM are thrilled to be able to present these timely and impactful works at a time when the rights of LGBTQIA+ people are under attack. \n—Rebecca Fasman\, Curator\, Kinsey Institute Indiana University \n“My first encounter with Bettina Rheims’ work goes back to a group exhibition in 1993 at the Kunstverein Frankfurt. This show made clear that Bettina was one of our era’s most important artistic personalities. Countless museum exhibitions in the world’s major museums repeatedly confirmed this impression in the years that followed. \nI am proud to be able to show Bettina Rheims’ work at WEAM. This exhibition is the fourth collaboration between our museum and the Kinsey Institute and continues our successful partnership with Rebecca Fasman\, the institute’s curator. \n—Helmut Schuster\, Director\, WEAM \nBuy Ticket

SUMMARY:Intimate Forms by Emilio Sanchez
DESCRIPTION:“Intimate Forms” features the work of Emilio Sanchez\, a Cuban-born artist who moved to the United States in the late 1930s. Sanchez is best known for his drawings and paintings of architecture and built spaces\, especially of Cuba before the revolution. His spare\, colorful style filters out every extraneous detail to focus on shape\, color\, and form\, creating bold geometric works that are instantly recognizable as his own. The Emilio Sanchez Foundation generously supports this exhibition. \nExhibition dates: November 28\, 2022 – February 28\, 2023 \n Buy Ticket

SUMMARY:Psychopathia Sexualis by Austin Osman Spare

SUMMARY:Quarantine Nudes by Kevin Berlin
DESCRIPTION:“Quarantine Nudes” by Kevin Berlin is a solo show of the artist’s work. \n“Quarantine Nudes” revisits the classical nude with spontaneity and directness\, following the Renaissance tradition of drawing from life as the basis for expression and the development of ideas. Created shortly after the end of quarantine in Italy in 2020\, “Quarantine Nudes” explores themes such as vulnerability\, desire\, and hidden thoughts portrayed in a palette of primarily black and white with touches of vibrant color. \nExhibition dates: November 28\, 2022 – February 13\, 2023 \n \n \n“45 Years of Nudes” is Berlin’s second solo show at the WEAM.  \n“45 Years of Nudes” explores Berlin’s lifetime interest in the human form as a basis for inspiration. The installation features a 45-year timeline of painting\, sculpture\, and performance art. As a unique retrospective exhibition\, it invites the viewer to take a closer look at the creative process and development of the nude over time. \nExhibition dates: February 14\, 2023 – May 29\, 2023

SUMMARY:The Eroticism of Things
DESCRIPTION:A pocket watch with a secret rear chamber\, a wooden dough scraper\, a shiny leather boot\, a fresh bread roll – even before Freud\, people were attributing erotic qualities to things. \n“The Eroticism of Things: Collections on the History of Sexuality” traces the material and immaterial production of eroticism. Shape and color\, purpose and use\, implicit allusions\, and explicit renderings all make things the stuff of erotic fantasies while also making them eloquent documents for a cultural history of sexuality. \nUsing examples culled from the collections of sexologists Magnus Hirschfeld and Alfred Kinsey\, as well as from Naomi Wilzig’s art collection\, the exhibition sheds light on differing natures of and intents in collecting\, classifying\, presenting\, and interpreting erotic things. The show asks what distinguishes eroticism\, sexuality\, and pornography from each other\, how erotic objects reinforce or question gender relations\, and how the everyday use of things can even turn killers of love into agents of love. \nThe exhibition shows all kinds of different erotic relationships people can enter into with things and treats the eroticization of things as a cultural practice that can play out either implicitly or explicitly\, in the imagination or in deed\, alone or between two or more people. Certain objects can kindle desire and lust\, provoke erotic fantasies\, and become tools of pleasure\, as an installation by the artist Marc Martin also shows. This is a joint exhibition by the Research Center for the Cultural History of Sexuality at Humboldt University\, Berlin and the Museum der Dinge (Museum of Things). Produced in collaboration with WEAM and the Kinsey Institute \nExhibition dates: December 03\, 2019 – March 30\, 2020 \n Buy Ticket

SUMMARY:Protected Beauty
DESCRIPTION:“Protected Beauty” examines masculine beauty through the lens of artists represented in the Kinsey Institute’s art collection. Many of the works in this exhibition came to the Kinsey Institute at a time when there were little to no other repositories that would accept artwork that presented the male nude outside of socially accepted contexts. \nNaomi Wilzig established her Miami Museum with a similar intention. She explained that she wanted to evoke the sensual experience of the pleasure and pain of love and also wanted to send a message of tolerance that acknowledges the community and diversity of mankind. The traveling exhibition “Protected Beauty” is a logical collaboration between two American institutions that focus on fostering an understanding of human sexuality. The result is breathtaking\, beautiful\, and full of social and political relevance. The exhibition includes works by Robert Mapplethorpe\, George Platt Lynes\, Wilhelm von Gloeden\, Mike Miksche\, Paul Cadmus\, Pavel Tchelitchew\, Andrey Avinoff\, and Marcel Vertes. \nExhibition dates: November 28\, 2016 – March 01\, 2017 \n Buy Ticket

SUMMARY:Paul Kagan
DESCRIPTION:In a sweeping review of the world of the ’60s when all eyes were fixated on San Francisco’s Haight-Ashbury counter-culture that gave birth to “flower children\,” psychedelic drugs\, and music that spoke to the heart of the civil rights movement\, “A Gada Da Vida” (“In the Garden of Eden”)\, a major body of work by celebrated photographer Paul Kagan\, will be seen for the first time in South Florida. Chicago-born Kagan had\, at the age of 10\, already distinguished himself as a photographer in a career that was to take serious shape in the late ’50s when his family moved to Los Angeles. While still in high school\, he led the Woolworth picket lines. By the time he entered Berkeley in 1960\, Kagan was listed by the House Un-American Activities Committees as one of the country’s most dangerous radicals traveling to Europe and Morocco\, taking photos along the way. He returned to San Francisco to open “Electric Tibet\,” the first head shop on Telegraph Avenue\, which was frequently published in “The Oracle\,” the hippie era’s famed newspaper. Universally remembered are the photos of a child sharing a saddle with a mounted policeman in Golden Gate Park and another\, “Yum Yam\,” of a couple having sex in the lotus position with an overlay of psychedelic images and colors. Many of his unpublished works\, including erotic phonographs\, photos of the Monterey Pop Festival\, the Human Be-In of 1967\, and the People’s Park protests of 1969\, will be on view at WEAM. \nExhibition dates: September 18\, 2014 – November 30\, 2014 \nBuy Ticket

SUMMARY:Justice Howard
DESCRIPTION:That Alice from Wonderland is one little strumpet. And we’re not the first to say so. In fact\, there’s a long list of literary\, cinematic\, and artistic voices out there that can give you a bunch of sexual interpretations of what falling down a rabbit hole really means. And the latest\, from famed photographer Justice Howard\, is about the best way we can think of to wrestle away those Monday blues. \nThe World Erotic Museum on South Beach will host a month-long exhibit by Howard entitled “Alice in Thunderland.” It will feature many of the photo subjects that have brought Howard to international acclaim\, emphasizing vixens. Think back on your formative years\, on the starlets that your parents always tried to keep you from watching (and doing other things\, too)\, and chances are at least some of them will show up at the exhibit\, at least in the photos. Mamie Van Doren\, Sybil Danning of The Howling II\, Amazon Women on the Moon\, and punk rock’s Exene Cervenka are just some of the ladies on display. But\, lest you think this is exploitation in the name of art\, know that Howard’s work comes from her mantra – women empowerment. Sure\, she focuses on Playboy Playmates and Penthouse Pets\, but it’s done with an awareness that turns the tables on the objectifying lens. \nExhibition dates: May 2\, 2011 – May 30\, 2011 \n Buy Ticket

SUMMARY:Rembrandt: Erotic Secrets
DESCRIPTION:Long dismissed as dirty little secrets\, Rembrandt’s erotic etchings have been known to collectors for centuries but rarely seen by the public. In 2001\, the British Museum exhibited several of the prints. Now\, the World Erotic Art Museum in Miami Beach is showing the entire collection together- 20 etchings- for the first time. \nRembrandt depicts sexual encounters in a suggestive but unambiguous way in works like “The Ledikant” (1646)\, which portrays a couple making love. \nBy today’s standards\, the etchings — inspired by the Bible\, Greek mythology\, and everyday life — seem tame. But in Rembrandt’s time\, they were scandalous and closely guarded by those who owned them. By featuring work by a renowned artist like Rembrandt (1609-69)\, the museum’s owner\, Naomi Wilzig\, said she hoped to “elevate our position within the artistic community” and prove that “erotic doesn’t mean pornographic.” \nExhibition dates: November 29\, 2011 – March 31\, 2012 \n Buy Ticket
