Tea & Sex is a roundtable discussion in which participants can dive into a variety of topics related to human sexuality. This month, we're exploring porn.
Not that long ago, a person who wanted to view porn had pretty much two options: buy a magazine or rent an adult video. The rise of the internet, however, has completely changed the way we engage with porn and the amount of porn we consume. With porn so readily accessible, are people's expectations and perceptions of sex changing? Does porn distort ideas of sexual relations and reinforce sex myths, or can most people separate fantasy from reality? Has the accessibility of porn had positive impacts?
Anti-pornography activists argue that pornography, both in its production and consumption, is demeaning and contributes to violence against women by reinforcing sexual and cultural attitudes that are complicit in rape and sexual harassment. What, if anything, can be done about this? Is it possible to ban porn completely, as these advocates would like? Does viewing pornography on a regular basis result in decreased respect for long-term, monogamous relationships? How is it affecting teens and young adults who are exposed to more and more porn at younger ages? This and more will be discussed. Come join us!
